Anyone Still Out There?

Anyone still subscribed and reading?

If you haven't guessed or realized, I've been in a SERIOUS blogging rut.  My last post was at the end of October and it's already almost Christmas!

So what's been going on?  A ton of stuff, but hardly any running.  Uh oh... I've been dreading writing this post since Wine & Dine, which is probably another reason I haven't been around in awhile!

Daniel and I during Wine & Dine this year!

My friends and I all headed down to Disney for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend.  We had an amazing time, as always.  But?  I had hands down one of my worst and easily my slowest races ever.  So much so that I've pretty much sworn off running for a long while.  At around Mile 9 of the race, I decided I don't want to run the full marathon in January.  AT ALL.  I just don't have the mindset to train for anything right now.  And the thought of waking up 4 mornings in a row to complete the Dopey?  Hurts my brain.  Bad.  Even though I paid for it already, I see no point in forcing myself through 26.2 miles when I know for a fact I'd be miserable and cranky.  So as of right now, I'm going to run the 5k, 10k, and half marathon.  And then cheer on all my crazy friends and supply them some dole whips during the full marathon.  :)

I know I was all gung-ho about the race series but I hate to say that running has lost it's luster for me.  Even driving on the shuttle bus heading to the starting area of Wine & Dine, part of me really just wanted to skip the entire race and meet my friends at the after party.  Pretty sure that's why I had such a crappy race.  My mind and heart just weren't in it.  I'm burnt out and just don't enjoy it anymore.  I love the camaraderie that the races bring and the excitement of all of the runners and my friends, but the training is downright boring and lonely for me lately.

Is it CrossFit's fault?  Possibly.  And that's ok with me.  I have SO much fun doing it that I honestly would rather go to the CrossFit box for an hour and work out instead of go on a lonely 3 hour run by myself.  My CrossFit training has carried me through my last 6 half marathons almost completely.  I've hardly 'trained' for those in terms of running.  So I wouldn't mind just running half marathons every now and then.

At our holiday fundraiser this weekend :)

Don't worry.  I'm not giving up running completely.  And I will NEVER get sick of Disney!  I will still be doing some of the races in January with the gang.  Plus the half during Wine & Dine is still on my radar since I've done it every year it's been around.  And then there's the NYC full next November!  Some of us have guaranteed entry for 2014 and I wouldn't pass that up.  I'm hoping that more than a few months off will get me back into the mindset of running another full.

So that's my story.  I'll still be blogging as things start to pick up again.  Hopefully some of you guys stick around for the ride!  :)

As for the blog name change that I talked about months ago?  I need to get my act in gear for that too, especially since I won't be running as much.  :)  But don't worry, I'll keep you guys updated and this site will always work and when the time comes, redirect to the new site.

  1. I think many of us are experiencing a running and training rut. Honestly, for me it's a mixture of many things - but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! Good for you for realizing that you don't want to train/run the full and backing off. I respect that so much! I hope to see you down there!

  2. I'm here.

And I agree with you. I dread getting up that early and being herded onto a bus that moves slower than I run. Then standing in the cold -- or it could be hot and humid. Because in Florida you never know until a few days before.

5Ks are fun, I love the half marathon, and I think the 10K distance is perfect for Disney, but I'm definitely not looking forward to the marathon. I was kicking butt at Dopey training until about Disneyland, but then everything fell apart. Work, travel, getting sick, etc. Even now I still haven't done more than a 14 miler so I know I'll be looking at a(nother) 5+ hour marathon and that makes me dread it even more. And, when you aren't looking forward to the race, it just makes the training even worse.

But, I'm going to do it. I want that inaugural Dopey medal -- it's the only reason I spent that much money and the only reason I'm doing another WDW marathon. I thought about jumping on the marathon course somewhere whenever I felt like waking up and taking home the medal, but then I wouldn't be able to look at it without knowing that I'm a cheater.

Come suck it up with me, don't worry about your time, finish, celebrate, and take the bling back home!

    1. Thanks, Jonathan :) Good luck with the entire weekend. Hopefully we run into each other! I made my friends promise to NOT let me run. I know just how miserable I'd be and I'm much better at being a spectator for the full this year :)

  3. Jen, we want to be on your dole whip supply list! Sorry you will not be doing the whole Dopey Challenge but I certainly understand. The training has been hard and very lonely for me at times. Luckily our last long run next weekend Christine will be here to run with me. This is a one and done and then I will pick and choose a few marathons. Dopey once is quite enough!

  4. Ummm...can I just say, ditto? OK, granted I wasn't doing the Dopey, but still. All I have been doing is CrossFit and I LOVE it. Even when I dread going there, I go and am so glad I did. Running, I've done such minimal running lately. I try and go for a run and it is so difficult to get my head in the right place to do it. I love the feeling of crossing the finish line (and getting my medals) and all the stuff that goes along with race day, but I don't know. I'm definitely in a running funk. Point of this long rant? I feel ya.

Unrelated, but since you're the only other CrossFit person I "know," I got waaaaaay too excited watching the Biggest Loser (guilty pleasure) because I saw Bob Harper wearing a shirt that said "For a Good Time Call Fran: 21-15-9." I actually knew what the shirt meant! I also kind of want the shirt now...anyway, random thought sharing is now done. Sorry! :)

    1. OMG can I tell you how much I LOVE that Bob Harper is addicted to CrossFit?!!? All of his shirts and stuff are CrossFit related, and all of his special guests and insane CF athletes. Just sucks that he can't mention the word 'CrossFit' without headquarters asking for money. It's free publicity! I guess BL doesn't want to promote it either though.

    2. I've become kinda obnoxious when watching the show yelling at my husband during Bob's workouts, "I know what that is!" "I do that!" "That's all CrossFit!." Can't wait to see tonight's episode!

  5. Something must be in the water because I feel the same way. Until waivers were released, I wasn't that excited for this half, and there's still a part of me that just wants to get it over with. I've had it with my ITBS so I'm switching gears after WDW. I don't have any races on the 2014 radar and I'm OK with that.

  6. Hey lady i wondered what was going on with you. :( Honestly I am SO burnt out and not looking forward to dopey at all. I have only run 4 times since wine and dine, all 3 milers, and my longest run is a 13 miler. I am going to try a 16 or 17 tomorrow and just wing dopey. Nervous? Heck yes! Ug.

  7. Sorry you're in a rut. It happens. I had one in 2011. Just didn't have training in me. I took a break and before long, was ready and excited to run again. If you're having fun with CrossFit, why not!? Good idea to give yourself a break from the marathon is you don't want to do it. That's really smart. I'm going to do "just" the 5K, 10K and Half too! Glad to see you back on the blog!!

  8. Actually I'm new here so, while not technically "still" here, thanks for keeping the site active! I've been reading everything on here for the last few days trying to prep for January. Not Dopey, but my first full. I'm also a huge CF fan & mostly do stuff in my garage but I'm right there with you. I stare longingly at the weights & devise various WODs to do after we get back in January before trotting off for another run. The only consolation is that it will all be worth it soon. You should consider doing the Dopey just to complete it and be the groups photographer without worrying about pace. Or turn it into a WOD, alternating pushups & burpees every mile or something....Hope to see you there!

    1. Thanks, Dave! Turning the race into a WOD? Now that's a pretty good idea! :)

  9. Hi I just discovered your blog! I had my worst race at the Wine and Dine also and it took me a VERY long time to get back into training. It was very discouraging but you have to have a bad race every once in a while right?!

    1. Hey Courtney, thanks for reading! And very true. I know not all races will be magical, hopefully this weekend coming up is a great one!

  10. I cannot agree more about Wine and Dine - I was totally disinterested in that race. I was 2 weeks post-marathon and hating everything about running. I had a total meltdown the day after the race (mostly fatigue related I think) and then took a little break. Dopey is an insane challenge and I give you a TON of credit for being realistic about the whole thing and not running the marathon. We'll look for you in the spectator crowds and hopefully we'll see you around during the weekend. :) -Christine

  11. Still here, rockstar. I feel you on Wine & Dine, which is weird since it's usually my favorite race. Guess, was just burned out from Chicago Marathon. But, hey, Dopey in a week, killer! Time to get back into it, so through on the Black Keys' "Howlin for You" and get your game face on. We've got some running to do.

  12. Sorry to hear you are feeling burnt out, but I'm SO glad you found something you love as much as Crossfit! Have fun during Marathon Weekend - I'm with you, I have NO desire to wake up four mornings in a row that early!

  13. Sorry to hear that you have been down on running. I completely understand though, I had one of my worse races ever and had to get taken away on a medical car at the 10K mark at Wine and Dine. I was so down on myself and running but tried other workouts to keep my motivation up. Please know that you blog means a lot to many of us out here and you are a great inspiration to so many; running or not !! :)

    1. Thank you so much, Mary! Your comment just made my day and I showed it to my bf and said 'wow, this is completely why I still write this blog!' Sorry to hear about W&D but keep on chugging along. Like someone else said, some races are just tough ones, there will be great ones too!

  14. I am here and quite new to your blog! It is actually really inspiring to see that you have run so many races and your blogs about the Disney races really helped me understand what it is all about and how it all works. Thanks for putting so much time and effort into chronicling your running with Disney! You have inspired me to start running and sign up for a few Disney Races! I have only ever done a smaller scale 5k, so this should be an interesting journey for sure!

I said all that to say: Thanks for your writing, I love it and I will keep on reading even if you decide to scale back your running :)
